South African Family Day

Family Day is celebrated in South Africa; although this holiday is being celebrated in more and more countries. In South Africa, Family Day is celebrated on the Monday after Easter Sunday. This celebration can be addressed in two ways: as a celebration of the family group or as a celebration of the family of the Nation.

In the first instance, Family day has been described as an extension to Mother’s or Father’s day and can be treated as such with cards and gifts given to the family as a whole.  It is a day to be spent with your family either visiting relatives or just by spending quality time together.  You can enjoy looking into your family history and reinforce your cultural identity.

St Georges Day

St George is the patron Saint of England.  St George’s day is on the 23rd April.  On this day some people wear a red rose pinned to their coat.  It is to show that they remember St George. A rose is England’s national flower.  Guides and scouts sometimes take part in a St George’s day parade.St George is not just England’s patron saint.  He is the patron Saint of Georgia, Catalonia, Palestine and Portugal as well as others.Pictures of St George usually show him carrying a flag of a red cross on a white background.  In the 12th century Richard the Lion Heart adopted this emblem and it became known as the George Cross.  It is now the flag of England and is used as part of the Union Jack.

Cinco De Mayo

The holiday of Cinco de Mayo which literally means ‘5th of May’ is a regional holiday in Mexico celebrated in the state of Puebla. The celebrations of Mexican culture involve food, music, customs, dancing and drinks unique to Mexico! Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico’s Independence Day from Spain but it is in memory of a ‘David and Goliath like fight between Mexico and France. In 1862 at the ‘Battle of Puebla’ 4000 Mexican soldiers beat 8000 French soldiers as the French invasion of Mexico began. It marked an important time in Mexico’s battle for independence.

Today the celebration is a time for great national pride as well as celebrating Mexican heritage and teaching children about the culture. Today it has become much like St Patrick’s Day. You don’t have to be Mexican to celebrate it!
