Celebrating January

 5th-Guru Gobind Singh's Birthday-Sikh

Guru Gobind Singh was the 10th and last Guru.  He gave Sikhs the Five Ks so they could be easily identified. These included a comb, bangle, dagger, shorts and uncut hair.  11th-Milk Day-America

A reason to drink more milk!  If you can take a look at some cows, draw or colour pictures of cows and think about food containing milk.  You could include discussions about breast feeding too!

13th- St Hilary's Day- Christian

In 1205 on St Hilary's day there was a terrible frost and since then this day has been known as the coldest day of the year.  Keep a weather chart to find out if this is true!!

14th-Pongal-Hindu

Celebrating February

5th-12th Bramley Apple Week England  Healthy Eating Resource bag

Make pies, cakes or  bake apples this week. Look at them in shops, print with them or plant apple pips. If you are lucky enough to have a Bramley tree in your garden why not decorate it?Also use the opportunity to talk about healty eating. 7th-Chinese New Year-China

1st-St David's Day-Wales

The patron saint of Wales.  Make daffodils, colour in dragons and eat bara brith (similar to a fruit teacake)

12th Commonwealth Day

A time for learing about the countries in the commonwealth, You can learn about the flags, language and food from each of the countries.Have a look at the commonwealth website as they often have information packs to down load.Click here for information! We also have some excellent resource books called 'A trip around the world' They contain everything you need to know about a selection of countries including maps, flags, recipies, facts, language etc. They are detachable sheets which can be photocopied to make them a reuseable resource. 23rd-Easter-Christian

The most important festival in the Christian calendar.  Celebrated around the world with decorated eggs and bread.  Send cards decorated with a cross.Again we offer an ideal resource bag for exploring the Christian Faith through the eyes of a child. 31st -Mawlid al Nabi-Muslim

A celebration of the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad, founder of Islam. As with all Islam festivals it is a time to give to charity and for forgiveness. Again we have a Islamic Religious Resource Bag to compliment this festival.

 

 

Celebrating April

8th-Hana Matsuri-Buddhist

A celebration of Buddah's birthday.  Hana means flower so Flower festivals are held.  Make lots of paper flowers  for the girls to wear in their hair.  Boys can wear white bands around their heads. Its is not to be confused with Hina Matsuri which is in March and is a festival (Matsuri in Japanese) for girls and their dolls (Hina) . 13-14th-Baisakhi Vaisakhi -Sikh

Pet Month 

Promote kindness to animals and pet care.  Collect all your soft toys and have a pet show.  Make certificates or cups to give to the cutest 'pet'

19-27th Passover-Judaism

This is the time when the Jewish people were freed from slavery.  Families celebrate with special food served on a Seder plate.  Lots of information can be found on the internet.
